There’s More To Workplace Perks Than Money

In a 2019 survey, 32% of Kiwis said that workplace perks, alongside a decent salary, were major factors in choosing to stay in a job or apply for a new one. Things like health insurance, free parking and flexible working hours are common perks, and highly sought after, and they are attractive lures in the job marketplace.

While these are the sorts of benefits that reel in prospective employees and help to retain the services of existing ones, we believe that one of the biggest perks you can provide is a workplace that people actually want to be a part of. While a large salary looks good all on its own, it loses its lustre when you have to work in a toxic environment to earn it. So, while it’s all well and good to throw a financially-based inducement at someone, it needs to be done in the right context.

Offering a close-knit team environment where everyone feels appreciated and motivated to contribute is a workplace perk you shouldn’t overlook.  And that’s where we come in. We build teams.  We design activities that foster culture development, communication, leadership, teamwork, fun, and celebration – put all of these things together and you can create a pretty special feeling at your place of work, one that will make it very difficult for your star performers to leave.

This is the thing about workplace perks. They do two very important things. They attract star recruits. And they retain star talent. Replacing great employees isn’t cheap and it isn’t easy. You know that only too well, and you can do your part in holding onto your best team members by giving them the greatest of all perks: a superb workplace culture. Cars, large pay packets and health insurance are great, particularly at attracting talent. But it’s a known fact that most employees place just as high a value on working in a great environment where they feel valued, supported and encouraged to be the best they can be.

We think there needs to be a happy balancing act with workplace perks. They need to compare favourably against what other companies are offering, and you only need to see online job adverts for the latest hooks being used to catch the right fish. But you don’t have to break the bank to reward your team. We know of a company that shouts their staff hot drinks at a CBD coffee cart on cold mornings. And another one that pays for Spotify accounts for their employees so they can listen to their music of choice as they work. Then there is the company that allow their team members to work at home whenever they choose, provided their productivity is undiminished. It’s the smaller, thoughtful things that make as big an impression as the more expensive things.

Again, we come back to the biggest workplace perk of all – an environment that your employees love working in. When you get that right, you’ll not only attract the best, but you’ll keep them as well. To build that sort of culture, get in touch and we’ll design something that benefits everyone.
